Road Trip Revisited

Getting up after a very good nights sleep, the red wine really seems to be working for me, we have a leisurely breakfast before saying fond goodbyes to our lovely hostess and hitting the road again to head back north, not forgetting that on crossing the border we would have an hour back too! Good job we don't have this problem in the UK - I don't think I'd ever leave home to cross the border into Devon if there was a time difference. We decide to head straight through to the coast to have a look at Byron Bay and leaving grey Lismore, we head back into the sun!

When we arrive at Byron, the sun has made a very welcome return and its positively hot, so hot we have to get out of the car so we stop for breakfast in a nice looking cafe.

Breakfast done, Oli takes us up to the Lighthouse where there's an amazing view of Byron's Bay and he's right, even though we had to pay $7 to park, it was worth it. We walked around the headland, not going right down to the rocky point (didn't see the point in that, haha) but we did get to a marker on the path declaring it was the easternmost point of Australia so we had to stop for a photo. As I got my trusty IPad out for a photo, a man was doing the same and had exactly the same as me - IPad with red cover, so we compared them and the fact that we must both be from the UK and were then able to take advantage of this new intimate friendship by trusting each other with our respective IPads to take group photos of each other (I don't normally trust anyone to take a photo with it in case they run off with it, I'd never catch them!). We laughed about getting them mixed up but we didn't, we managed to swap back and get it right, a bonus, and then carried on with our limited walk (seen one view of Byrons's, you've seen them all!) and headed back up to the Lighthouse where we stopped for an ice cream before getting back into a very hot car to continue up the coast.

As we cross the border, Oli asks if we want to continue home or stop off in Brisbane, which we think is probably worth a look as we won't get chance again and we're in no rush, so "yes please, we would". Although Oli worked in Brisbane for a short while, he knows about as much as he did about Lismore, but we soon find a place to park on a road, a proper parking space for which we pay for two hours, having had bad luck with car parks so far on this trip! We head downhill, always downhill, and reach the heart of the city. On reaching the river and a bridge, we take a photo to prove we've been there but the weather is grey and cloudy again so not much point in hanging around and we head back up the hill after a quick stop at Starbucks to refuel. There's no problem finding the car for a change, we get straight back to it and Oli comments that he doesn't know this part of the city and where he has to go so I suggest a map app on the phone (sometimes I surprise myself) which he checks and works out which way he needs to go and we're off, home in an hour!

Well, that was a mistake, thinking we'd be home anytime soon as we got onto the right road, the rain started raining and the road filled up with traffic all presumably heading the same way as us as it took us about an hour to crawl out of the city. Whoever thought it was a good idea to stop in Brisbane should be shot! Anyway, eventually we get back to Oli's flat and collapse in three heaps for about half an hour - that drive was hard work - Becky and I were knackered, I'm pretty sure Oli was too but he didn't complain so thanks Oliver for a good Road Trip.

When we start to come to again, we decide on Chinese for tea and get a take away. This is just right and as an added bonus, the prawn crackers are actually pink, hinting at the fact that they actually have prawns in them, unlike the ones back home which are white and probably have chemical prawn flavouring in them! All delicious and washed down with a drop of red wine, another good nights sleep was had by all!
